VISIT #1:
CANCUN 2021

Feb. 5, 2021

After a 4 hour journey via JetBlue from JFK to CUN, we arrived to muggy Caribbean heat and a journey through the airport that left me flustered. We went over to the currency exchange booth to exchange an extra $60, as we began to think on the flight over that we may not have had enough cash. Then, we made our way over to the Hertz counter to pick up our rental car, but we were whisked out of the terminal by a worker with absolutely no context whatsoever, put into a van (again, with absolutely no context) and were taken to another Hertz counter outside of the airport where we stood on line with a group of other visitors. 30 minutes later, we were being helped and received a bill for $150 for our one day rental, which made us nearly fall over, but we stomached it because we needed to get to Chichen Itza tomorrow. We tucked our tails, got in the car, and tried to leave the airport.

After spinning top in mud trying to get our Hertz rental GPS to give us directions to our resort, we finally gave up on it, found a Starbucks we could pull up to, to mooch off of their free wifi, and downloaded an offline version of the Yucatan map from Google Maps onto Jarren's phone so that we could maneuver using that instead.

Once the map was downloaded, we were finally able to make it to Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres. We checked in, met our butler, toured our plunge pool suite, then made our way to Bistro for dinner at 6 PM. We spent the rest of the night drinking and playing pool in the resort's sports bar.

Car Rental Tip: If you can rent your car outside of the airport, do it. One thing I've learned from years of rentals is that all airports, no matter where you are, charge service fees for airport pickup. You can save a LOT of money by finding your way to a counter outside of the airport. Also, renters under 25 years old always incur a young renters fee, which can sometimes be double the cost of the rental. This contributed to why my rental here was so high.

Google Maps Tip: I'm an Apple Maps person, but Google Maps definitely comes in clutch when you're in a foreign country with no wifi or cellular service. You can download the map of an area onto your phone so that you can use it offline, and it will work perfectly fine to help you navigate when you have no service! It is a life saver. Jarren taught me this trick, so it's not something I can take credit for.

We left late, which should come at absolutely no surprise to anyone that knows me. We had an appointment to get PCR tests done at 8:30 AM, because they were required in order to board a flight back to the States. After testing, we stopped at Mar House for breakfast, constantly looking at the clock while we ate. By the time we got into the car, it was 9:40 AM, and we both knew it was going to be a whirlwind of a day.

We left the resort and were met with an absolutely eye opening experience. Cancun truly is made to look like paradise: paved roads, sometimes flashy cars, nice buildings. The second you leave the coast, the facade fades and Mexico shows you the real, poor side of the area. It was incredibly humbling to see the world around us as we passed. There was a man who was holding up one of the biggest lobsters we'd ever seen, trying to get a sale of the equivalent of $5 USD for it, a child pushing his grandmother on a wheelchair on the side of the highway, houses clearly in decay. I felt a pang of traveler's guilt, knowing I'd just come from a resort not too far away where food and drinks were being wasted while we passed people who were obviously struggling. If you never left Cancun, you'd never know it was like this. We got onto the 180D for a straight drive that took 3 hours, 2 tolls, and one stop for skip-the-line tickets.

When we arrived at Chichen Itza, we met our connection who would get us into the park on an expedited line. Once inside, we strolled up to the temple and I was in awe. This was something I'd dreamed of visiting since I started learning Spanish in elementary school. The grandness of the temple, the mystery that shrouded it, all of it was incredible to me. What's more, there was a surprising sense of tranquility there. There was no clamor of the crowds as I was expecting, it was rather quiet and peaceful with only a handful of people around. The ambience and view was something I immediately wished I'd have more time to get lost in. We strolled around different areas of the park, and I was amazed at how untouched it all was. Not roped off from the public, everything was still in remarkable shape, and you could actually touch all of it. I stood and marveled at how high up the hoops at the Great Ball Court were, amazed at the fact that people managed to get stone balls into them only using their hips, knees, and elbows.

We ended up only getting to spend around 30 minutes at Chichen Itza due to us needing to return the car in Cancun by 4:30 PM, so we headed back to the car and decided to stop for the free lunch that was included in our tickets on our way. We blew through lunch in a total of 10 minutes, then began to make the the 2.5 hour journey back.

Some time into the drive, we realized that not only did we need to stop for gas, but we were running low on pesos. I'd done extensive TripAdvisor research into the cost of driving from Cancun to Chichen Itza before we arrived, but did not account for spending a bit more for skip-the-line access at the temple. Therefore, we were ran out of pesos and wouldn't be able to fill the car up at the only gas station between Chichen Itza and Cancun. This made it an extra hassle to get the car back in time as we were barely cutting it as it was, and now I wasn't even confident we would have enough gas to make it. We needed every ounce of luck we had to be able to make it back to a gas station in Cancun to fill the rest of the tank with a credit card before we could return the car. Talk about a stressful ride back. However, by the grace of the powers that be, we made it back with barely any gas to spare, filled up, and were able to return the car without a hitch. We walked over to the mall across the street and waited for our Uber to arrive, then went back to the resort.

Exhausted but hungry, we dragged ourselves over to dinner at the steakhouse, then got back to our room and knocked out at 9:30 PM.

Our last full day in Cancun, but more importantly, Super Bowl Sunday. We start our day getting straight out of bed and out to the spa at 9 AM for a hydrotherapy session, where we take a quick shower, and then are are whisked from pool to pool, then to a steam room.

Once done, we return to our room to change, then make our way to Mar House for breakfast and mimosas. We stay until they are almost ready to close, then walk over to the beach bar for margs and piña coladas, then we were off to the beach.

We lounge on the beach for most of the day, dip into the water, and drink. After a few hours, we venture to Bistro for lunch, then get showered and dressed and head to the Super Bowl barbecue that the resort is hosting, where we watch Tom Brady destroy Patrick Mahomes with all the other American patrons at the resort.

Once the Super Bowl is over, we head back to our room and knock out for a second night in a row.

On our final morning in Cancun, we are early risers, with 9 AM plans to squeeze in one last hydrotherapy session. We head to Mar House at 8:30 AM for one last breakfast, but get too comfortable watching the waves crash on the beach while we eat, and decide then and there to skip hydrotherapy and lay out on the beach instead.

We get a marg and espresso martini from the piano bar, then lay out for an hour. As time to leave approaches, we head back to our room to get ready to leave, and when 10:30 AM rolls around, we say goodbye and head to the airport, rejuvenated and not eager to get back to the snow in New York that had fallen the day before.

Cost to Travel:

Our fare was pretty typical. We flew roundtrip from JFK to CUN with JetBlue for $261.08 per person. A 3 day trip in February from NYC to CUN usually costs between $220 to $360 per person.

Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres Review:

Cost: $1,041.00

Length: 3 nights
Room: Elegance Club Plunge Pool Suite

This is the greatest resort I've ever been to and will compare every resort to this one moving forward. The service was impeccable, the drinks were phenomenal, the room was astounding, the grounds were stunning. My only complaint was that the food could've been better, but that does not at all mean that it was bad, I just expected more.

Your money will come back,
but your time won't.
